Water is widespread transparent liquid which has neither taste nor smell. It is a chemical substance that is composed of hydrogen and oxygen. It is the basis of all life therefore probably it is the most important liquid in the world. It is known that all well-known forms of life require water (except for some types of bacteria) and it is believed that life has began exactly in the water. Water covers about 71% of Earth’s surface. Of the total quantity of water almost half is chemically combined – rock (hydrate water) and that is why it is not available for use. From the available amount of water 2,1 % consists of snow and glaciers while 97,3% – the world’s seas and oceans. The rest is reserves of Earth’s atmospheric vapour, underground water, lakes and rivers. The lack of freshwater is the most serious problem that mankind faces. Latvia is rich in variety of water quality. Freshwater resources are many times higher than the current and future water consumption needs. Approximately 75% of population use the central water supply but they are not always satisfied with a quality. Drinking water in Latvia is mostly gotten from underground water springs and its reserves provide people with drinking water. However, water is a good solvent and it absorbs a variety of substances which it comes into contact, for example, facing with different substance of chemical rocks in the ground the water is enriched with chemical elements. In different places in Latvia water may be naturally elevated by concentration of individual chemical compounds and its presence is determined by hydro-geological conditions that are specific to the region.
